The Leeds Institute of Health Sciences in the School of Medicine hosts this annual Charles Thackrah annual lecture as a key event in the School’s calendar to highlight the discipline of public health.

This lecture is also a commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the Nuffield Centre for International Health and Development, which sits within the Leeds Institute for Health Sciences. Dr Ian Smith – Former Executive Director of the Office of the Director General at the World Health Organisation (Geneva) and currently Honorary Lecturer at University of Hong Kong delivered this lecture entitled “Impacting on Global Health – remembering people” . He provides an overview of changes in public health over the last 40 year from a conceptual and practical point of view and suggests a set of public health competencies and values for the future, these having a clear link to the role of educational institutions like the Nuffield Centre in the University of Leeds.
